Hello and welcome to The Old Summers Home. I have been drooling over all the great fall decor ideas over on HomeBNC and I thought it was about time I give my own DIY Fall Decor Project a go! The following project is as easy as they come. I whipped this up in 10 minutes time including the time it took me to dig through my ribbon stash!
DIY Fall Decor Focal Piece Supplies
- metal vase with burlap lace trim
- a pin
- a short piece of thin ribbon or string
Choosing my vase for my fall decor project
I already made this vase for a piece in my kitchen home decor a while back. I used this tutorial from HGTV to make my new galvanized metal look old. The results had me floored and I tried it on any galvanized metal I could find hahaha.
To finish my vase off I added some burlap and lace trim to the top of the bucket. I use this vase to hold some DIY cotton branches I made.
Its sweet farmhouse perfection for my kitchen decor and I display it alongside my Picture Frame Lantern. This is the vase that we will use to make today’s DIY fall decor centrepiece.
Making my DIY ribbon bow!
If you read my Farmhouse Christmas Wreath post then you know I struggle with bows. Making my Christmas Wreath I came up with the most simple bow that literally takes just a few minutes to make! It’s so easy even I can make it haha!
Check out our Facebook Live video on how to make your own ribbon bow!
Once your bow is finished go ahead and pin it to your burlap lace trim in the centre of your vase top rim. I chose to pin mine so I can revert back to my original piece of kitchen decor after fall.
Fill your DIY Centrepiece with Cattails!
In all honesty, you can fill your vase with any fall decor branches you may have. I happen to have some cattails on hand so that is what I used for this fall decor project.
Simply lay your cattails out on a flat surface so that you can stagger the heights of each.
Next, fold the ends of your cattails approximately halfway up, determine this length by using the height of the vase for measurement. Lastly, fold the half down to the bottom like shown in the image above.
Place them one by one into your rustic vase at different angles so the bent ends fill out the bottom.
Mine was a bit too full so I simply used a thin piece of ribbon to lightly tie them below the rim of my rustic vase so that it is out of sight.
Enjoy your DIY Fall Decor Centrepiece!
