Hi and welcome to The Old Summers Home. Today we have a great laundry room change holder idea for you! While doing the laundry how often do you find coins in pockets or at the bottom of the washer at the end of the cycle?
All the time around here!
I used to put them on top of the dryer where they would eventually just fall to the floor and get swept away by passing feet. I decided we needed a cute little coin basket and why not make it fun and match my decor at the same time.
Today I’m going to show you how I made my ‘Keep the change, you filthy animal’ laundry room change holder.

Laundry Room Change Holder Instructions
Cut your wood
To cut your wood to the right size place your coin holder onto the wood and determine how much space you will need to allow room for your cute little saying.
My repurposed wood is approximately 4″ wide therefore I used my mitre saw to cut it, you could also use a circular saw or even a handsaw. Make sure to mark a straight line using a square if you are not cutting with a mitre saw. Don’t forget your safety glasses!
Once you have it cut you can sand your cut edges if needed. My finished board is 10″ long giving me enough room for the quote, basket and proper spacing.
Paint your coin holder
This step is optional depending on what you like. My Mini Laundry Baskets are blue so a few coats of spray paint and tada they match my decor. Choose whatever colour you like or leave yours as is.
Add a cute saying to the change holder
I chose “Keep the change ya filthy animal” because my oldest loves Home Alone and gets a kick out of that saying. She helps with laundry so it’s something she will see just as much as I do.
You can put ‘check your pockets’ or ‘the coin drops here’ or whatever saying your little heart desires.
Because I have a Silhouette Cameo I created a cut file in my program and went ahead sized it and cut it on 651 matte white vinyl.
A silhouette is a cutting machine that cuts many different forms of media. You can customize whatever you are making in their software relatively easily.
My favourite place to purchase vinyl is through ScriptDesigns. I found them when I first started into the vinyl world and their customer service is the best I have ever seen. If you are in the cutting world be sure to check them out.
Alternatively, you can choose to hand paint your sign or even purchase already cut lettering. If you are painting go slow and steady. Acrylic craft paints work great for hand lettering.
Attach your saw hanger
Now that you have your quote on your board it is time to attach some hardware so you can hang it. I love to use saw hangers for my signs because they are forgiving when hanging a sign and are pretty strong.
You would be surprised how heavy this laundry room coin holder gets over a few months of collecting!
Flip your board over and mark the centre of your board along the top. I usually go a minimum of an inch down from the top edge. Your saw hanger comes with the tiniest of little nails which can be a bit difficult to put in at times. To make this easier I use a small hammer and a pair of needle-nose pliers to hold the nail in place while I tap it in. Easy peasy and complete!
Attach your basket
Place your basket where you want it to be and make sure it is centred otherwise if you’re like me it will drive you batty hahaha.
My little laundry basket already has holes in it so I simply just marked through the hole onto the wood where I want to attach it. I used my drill and predrilled the hole. No need to risk splitting your board when you’ve come this far already. I used a 1/4 inch screw to hold my basket in place so that it wouldn’t pierce through the other side.
Hang your laundry room change holder
Now all that is left to do is hang your laundry room change holder in a convenient place near your washer and dryer. I chose a wall next to my washer because of convenience. You can use a drywall plug and screw or a nail (as long as it is long enough to ensure it reaches the stud). Hang it up, stand back and admire.
Cute baskets from amazon
As I promised, here are a few options you can choose from or see what else you can find. This is the perfect chance to get creative and add your own flair to this DIY project. The first one is like mine and a few more that I think are cute.
This is the laundry basket type that I used. They come in many colours or you can do like I did and spray paint them!
This pretty pen holder is fancy and a beautiful purple, it is also available in four other colours. The design is spaced close enough together to contain coins.
I don’t know about you but I love these cute little trash cans! I surely need to find a new project for these.
These are so cute too! Maybe not for this change holder but would work amazing on a shelf if you prefer that option!
