Hi and welcome to another Cooking with Jenn post from The Old Summers home. Summer is here and salads are a great side dish especially with readily available ingredients at your fingertips. This year I’m hoping to grow many of these ingredients in my new Raised Garden Bed so that I can have a fresh homegrown salad. This simple tossed garden salad recipe tastes delicious and you can top it with your favourite salad dressing which consequently makes it a fast and healthy option!
Here at The Old Summers Home salads are a hit with our entire family, therefore, we make a lot of them and like to change it up once in a while. We love Greek Salad, Caesar Salad, Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad and a great tossed garden salad, as a result, we get a lot of salad variety!
We try to incorporate a lot of fruit and vegetables into our family diet and a salad is one of the most simple ways to do so. So if you are trying to think of ways to add some veggies then check out this quick recipe to get you started!
All it takes is 10 minutes and simple 10 steps so let’s get started!

- chef knife
- paring knife
- carrot peeler
- large salad bowl
Simple Tossed Garden Salad Ingredients
- head of living lettuce
- large tomato
- bell pepper
- long English cucumber
- celery stalk
- 1/2 white onion
- 1/4 block of marble cheese
Wash Your Garden Salad Ingredients & Set Up!
Wash all your vegetables for the salad and shake off excess water. Make sure to wash your lettuce well between leaves because dirt tends to hide well. Set up your cutting area with all your supplies including a cutting board, chef knife and a paring knife as well as a bag for scraps and garbage. Things go faster when you are organized!
If you have a compost this would be a great time to save any discarded pieces for your garden. I’ve decided to start a mini compost for my raised garden bed rather than tossing all this potentially great fertilizer in the trash! Did you know that coffee grounds are great for the garden too? You can see more of that in our Garden Tour!
Every Garden Salad Needs Lettuce
Chop head of lettuce into bite-sized pieces then put in large salad bowl.
We have been purchasing living lettuce a lot recently, living lettuce is sold with roots on it, as a result, helps to keep it fresh longer. I have been meaning to try to plant one and see what happens but keep forgetting to hahaha when I do give it a go I will be sure to let you know how it goes!
A Little Tomato Adds Great Colour And Flavour
Chop tomato into cubes then add to salad bowl.
Peppers Add Sweetness To A Tossed Salad
Chop bell peppers into bite-sized pieces then add to salad.
I usually like to use two or more colours of bell peppers because it makes it nice and bright. I love the sweet taste of yellow and orange peppers so I usually add those too.
Cucumbers Are Perfect In A Garden Salad
Quarter cucumber lengthwise and chop into small pieces then add to bowl.
A Carrot Adds A Pop Of Colour To a Tossed Salad
Peel a carrot using a carrot peeler then once peeled continue using a carrot peeler to shave into the salad bowl thin pieces of carrot.
Celery Adds Freshness To A Tossed Salad
Slice a stalk of celery length wise and then chop to small pieces and add to salad bowl.
White Onion Adds Great Flavour
Dice up half of a white onion then add to salad bowl.
This small of an amount of onion, in this size of a salad, will not be overwhelming for the littles in your life, therefore, you can choose to add more as well if you prefer. I honestly don’t find a garden salad to be a garden salad without onions anymore so we always make sure to add some!
Cube up 1/4 block of marble cheese then add it to the salad bowl.
If you are making this salad the day before it will be served, you can choose to leave the cheese out to add in before serving.
Mix Your Tossed Garden Salad
Lastly, toss the salad well, mixing thoroughly. Then serve with your favourite salad dressing or cover and refrigerate for later use.
This simple tossed garden salad is ready to enjoy in as little as 10 minutes hence making it a perfect healthy side dish to all your summer meals.
