Hello, welcome to The Old Summers Home. Today I’m showing you one of my favourite fast and easy recipes, The Best French Toast Ever! In under 20 minutes, you and your family can be enjoying a sweet dessert-like meal that isn’t over the top. Growing up our french toast always consisted of salt & pepper no vanilla extract. I have no idea when or why I switched it but we have not looked back since.
Although this might be a breakfast recipe, around here it is most often served for Saturday lunch or a quick weeknight supper when I forget to take something out of the freezer hahaha. I have to say I really do love breakfast for supper these days. Alright, let’s get to this quick recipe and get you on your way to eating the Best French Toast Ever!
The Best French Toast Ever Total Time

Makes 15+ french toast
- mixing bowl
- measuring cup
- measuring spoon
- frying pan
- butter knife
- microwave plate cover
- 8 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
- Loaf of bread
- Butter or Margarine
How to make the best french toast ever!
Preheat frying pan to medium heat.
Firstly preheat your frying pan to medium heat. This is one of the most important steps when making pancakes, eggs, french toast etc. Having your pan preheated will allow everything to cook more evenly and prevent eggs and mix from spreading out in the pan before it is even warm. Ever notice the second batch of pancakes always turn out better than the first batch? That is because your frying pan is finally at the perfect temp.
Do not melt butter until ready to add first slice of battered bread to pan.
Mix the Best French Toast Ever Batter
Secondly crack eggs into mixing bowl.
This recipe calls for 8 eggs which makes this recipe large enough for our little family. You can also adjust the amounts of the ingredients by half for a smaller family or double it for a larger family.
Add in 1 cup of milk and 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.
Mix well until yolks are broken and mixture is one colour.
Cooking the French toast
Once your frying pan is nice and hot and some butter and spread around to cover the bottom of the pan.
Grab four or five slices of bread depending on how many you can fit in your frying pan then dip each slice individually into the batter flipping to make sure they are well saturated. Then place into the pan. Repeat until pan bottom is full.
Allow to cook for approx. 2 minutes then flip and check the other side. If not quite golden then flip back over for a little longer. Once both sides are golden remove from pan and start your next batch.
When I remove my french toast I like to add a little bit of butter on top each slice and stack them all on a plate. I then cover the plate with a microwave cooking cover to keep them warm while the remainder of the french toast cook.
This recipe makes approx. 15 slices of french toast which in my largest pan is 3 batches to cook. We like to pair our french toast with breakfast sausage and top it off with Aunt Jemima Butter Pancakes Syrup.
